There is no way I have any idea where to start to talk about Harry Nilsson. Best case scenario, you stumble upon him and feel you are the only one who knows about him. You then either jealously guard him from the philistines who will never get him the way you do, or rabidly proselytize about him to friends and strangers alike.
I have been looking forward to a documentary about him for years.
Buy his music. His voice is indescribable.
Read about him. He is a funny, unforgettable musician.
You hit the nail on the head there.
ReplyDeleteI appreciated how listening to him enabled you hear so many types of music: he went from a hip jazzy sound on PSS to rock to crooner to shipshod records that do comment well on the mid-70s post Watergate era, unconsciously or consciously. I mean play "pretty soon, there'll be nothing for everybody" next to "something true" next to "jesus christ your tall" with "How to write a song", it is impressive.
He is much more diverse than a greatest hits. The best voice and a guy who wrote songs that were better than his musical instrument ability because he had such a creative mind and just the best, most diverse voice.
